The Hazelwood Team
The Hazelwood's, Three Generations of Real Estate Professionals
It all began with Kathleen’s mother, Eileen Scarpa who in the 70’s became a realtor before her husband passed away. According to Kathleen, she had 5 children and was still raising three kids on her own. Eileen chose a career in real estate because it was “the only job out there at the time where a woman could make as much money as a man.” Eileen proved just that, with her award winning and successful career. Kathleen and Eileen became real estate partners in 1990. Sadly, Eileen because ill in 2000 and passed in 2009, but something Kathleen always keeps with her is how much fun she had with her mother. In that spirit, Kathleen remains a realtor today.
Kathleen Hazelwood is a second-generation realtor and partner of the Hazelwood Team. Prior to becoming a realtor, Kathleen was a paralegal for an attorney specializing in real estate, a loan processor and loan officer.
Kathleen obtained her license in 1981 but went on hiatus to raise her three children. Putting family first was a decision that she never regretted and believes it is the reason she is the success she is today!
Kathleen is not only highly successful realtor but she is very passionate about education and served the educational community. Kathleen is a lifetime member of the Virginia PTA. She is Past President of B. C. Charles Elementary and Gildersleeve Middle School. She served on the School Improvement Team at Gildersleeve Middle School as well as the Historian and also served as Secretary ,Treasurer and Carnival Chairperson aat B. C. Charles. She was also appointed by the School Board to be a member of the Educational Task force, a committee that was tasked with developing the academic academies for Heritage and Woodside High School. The Task Force was made up of parents, educators and people in business met to improve different aspects of schools including magnet programs.
Kathleen also felt a civic responsibility to her community and served a member of People to People (P2P). P2P is an organization of concerned Newport News citizens formed exclusively for the improvement of race relations and quality of life for the citizens of Newport News, more specifically to provide a catalyst for greater personal dialogue between residents of the city in an effort to focus on community needs.
Kathleen has been married to her husband Jimmy for forty years and they have three children Ryan, Ami and Alex. They also have nine grandchildren and one on the way! Who knows? You may see a fourth-generation realtor of the Hazelwood Team in the future!
In Kathleen’s free time she loves go biking and treasures spending time with her grandchildren whether it be paddle boarding, roller blading or relaxing by the pool.
Alex Hazelwood is a third-generation realtor and partner of the Hazelwood Team with his mother, Kathleen. Alex graduated from Longwood University in 2006 with a degree in business to work with his father in his jewelry business. However, Alex was drawn to Real Estate and began working with his mom and hasn’t looked back since!
Beyond his success in real estate, Alex’s servant leadership and excellence translates in other fields as well. Alex and a partner observed an opportunity within the coastal Virginia market and founded Labor Partners. Labor Partners serve to match local companies with the temporary resources they need in order to adjust for their business cycles.
Alex is also hardworking and dedicated, not only his businesses but in his civic contributions to his community. Alex took on the challenge of establishing a Kiwanis chapter in 2011, to help thirty other young entrepreneurs serve their community. Alex also plays a role in Project Search, an organization focused on preparing young people with disabilities for success in the workforce. Whenever possible, Alex serves in PORT, an organization that focuses on helping Virginia’s homeless population.
Alex and his wife Ashley have three children. In Alex's free time loves to spend time with his family and enjoys fishing of ANY kind.
The Hazelwood Team’s knowledge of the market and its trends, savvy negotiating skills, cutting edge marketing strategies, has earned them personal referrals and a lot of repeat business. But it is their shared values, dedication, hard work and sheer grit that has earned them a loyal clientele and to become an award-winning team.
This is what clients have to say about the Hazelwood Team:
