Welcome home to Poquoson! This close-knit coastal community located on the Virginia Peninsula is nestled among Hampton, Newport News and York County and an ideal city to raise a family or retire. Formerly part of York County, Poquoson became an incorporated town in 1952 and has a population of more than 12,000 living among its 78 square miles. Its name is derived from the Native Americans who inhabited the area before colonization by the English began. Longtime residents still refer to it as “Bull Island,” as for centuries farmers let their cattle roam free in Poquoson’s salt marshes. Bloomsburg Business Week selected Poquoson as “Best Affordable Suburb in Virginia.” Neighbors are friendly here in a civic-minded community known for its outstanding schools.
ARTS, MUSEUMS & ENTERTAINMENT

The city’s annual salute to the working watermen of the Chesapeake Bay is its annual Poquoson Seafood Festival held every fall.
Poquoson Art League furthers visual arts through teaching, programs, demonstrations, exhibitions and community involvement.
Yes, Poquoson has its own museum full of maritime artifacts from the 1800s. The Poquoson Museum even includes a 7-foot, 200-pound anchor that attracts a crowd.
Poquoson residents also benefit from the multiple festivals and entertainment options offered in nearby Newport News, Hampton and Williamsburg, the Southside of the Virginia Peninsula and Richmond.

Family-owned Poquoson Diner serves American, Greek, Italian, seafood and breakfast all day.
Deep fried crab balls, Bull Island clam chowder, hand-picked barbecue and the freshest seafood are on the menu at Surf’s Up Restaurant. Seafood aplenty at the local Surf Rider, too. Locals love Capt. Harrell’s Seafood House and McFatter’s, where diners feast on burgers, sandwiches and breakfast.

EDUCATION

Poquoson contains four public schools, and its mascot, the Bull Islander, refers to its roots.
Private schools nearby include Hampton Roads Academy, Peninsula Catholic High School and Denbigh Baptist Christian School, all in Newport News.
Poquoson is close to Christopher Newport University, Hampton University, William and Mary and Virginia Peninsula Community College. It is within an hour of Old Dominion University, Regent University and Norfolk State University.

Poquoson is located in close proximity to several major hospitals, including Riverside Regional Medical Center, Sentara CarePlex Hospital and Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital.
PARKS & RECREATION

Poquoson offers 84 miles of blueways to enjoy everything about the Chesapeake Bay.
Kids Island Playground is a community-built playground in front of Poquoson High School with 3,500 of space. Three soccer fields and a regulation baseball field are onsite and called Phillips Park.
Walk or jog Oxford Run Canal Trail, 1.38 miles accessible from the City Hall parking lot.
Messick Point & Pool includes two double boats ramps free for public use, a picnic shelter, nature trails, lighted baseball and softball fields and playground equipment.

Poquoson is just eight miles from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport and 15 miles from Norfolk International Airport.
Poquoson is nine miles from the Amtrak station in Newport News.
