Welcome home to Suffolk! Virginia’s largest geographic city is a splendid mix of rural and suburban, centrally located in the heart of Hampton Roads. Comprised of 429 square miles, Suffolk is where Mr. Peanut spent his entire life; he’s got his own statue. Downtown Suffolk boasts an old-fashioned Main Street, while Harborview in northern Suffolk has emerged as the go-to spot for new residents.

The natural beauty of Suffolk varies from Bennett’s Creek and Lone Star Lakes parks to the Great Dismal Swamp, which is unlike its name. These forested wetlands protect 220 species of birds and deer. River otter and black bears are among the regular sightings. While the city is full of so much to see and do, it’s also conveniently located to Norfolk and Virginia Beach. There’s lots to love in this southern city.


ARTS, MUSEUMS & ENTERTAINMENT

Built in 1837, Riddick’s Folly House Museum is the most imposing structure on Main Street. Find model trains and vintage railroad memorabilia at the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum. Suffolk Art Gallery is home to the oldest and largest juried photography exhibition in Hampton Roads. The gallery hosts many exhibitions and holds classes.

Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts is a downtown gem with a 530-seat theater and two beautiful galleries.

See the city from 14,000 feet at Skydive Suffolk.

Enjoy locally sourced ingredients and fresh seafood at Harper’s Table; don’t leave without sampling Harper’s Pork Belly Biscuit

Wood-fired pizza highlights the vast Italian menu that includes a variety of wines at Amici’s. Watch the boat traffic while savoring craft beer at Decoys Seafood.

EDUCATION

Suffolk Public Schools are comprised of 11 elementary, five middle and three high schools.

Suffolk’s private schools are Nansemond-Suffolk Academy with two campuses and Suffolk Christian Academy. Several other private schools are located near Suffolk, including Isle of Wight Academy.

Paul D. Camp Community College, Tidewater Community College, Old Dominion University, Hampton University, Christopher Newport University and Norfolk State University are all located within an hour of Suffolk.

You’ll love all the open space Suffolk offers, including these few top spots.

Walk, bike, hike the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge that’s 113,000 acres, making it the largest intact remnant of a vast swamp that once covered more than a million acres.

Golf, picnic, canoe, fish, kayak or simply enjoy the view at Sleepy Hole Park located along the Nansemond River. The park includes a freshwater lake and pier. Sleepy Hole Golf Course culminates in the legendary 18th hole, considered the most difficult finishing hole in the entire Hampton Roads region.

Bennett’s Creek Park includes disc golf, an 18-hole golf course with beautiful scenery. Lake Meade Park is home to some of the area’s best children’s activities. Lone Star Lakes features 11 lakes for freshwater fishing, nature trails, a fishing and crabbing pier, an archery range and a four-mile horse trail.

Golf Digest awarded majestic Riverfront Golf Club five stars; Golfweek ranked the course sixth in all of Virginia. Nansemond River Golf Course is the region’s premier waterfront golf course. Every hole is more beautiful than the last at Cedar Point Golf Course.


SHOPPING

Major supermarket chains Food Lion, Harris Teeter and Kroger can all be found in Suffolk. Almost every major retail chain has more than one location in Suffolk, which is also conveniently located to neighboring Chesapeake and Isle of Wight County as well as Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach and the Virginia Peninsula.

Birdsong Peanuts  and Sysco Hampton Roads is a major foodservice company are both located in Suffolk. Suffolk Public Schools employ more than 2,300 and the City of Suffolk employ more than 1,400. A Target warehousing and distribution center is located in downtown Suffolk. Naval Information Forces is an Echelon III command under U.S. Fleet Forces Command located in Suffolk.

With easy access to Interstates 64 and 664, Suffolk is in close proximity to the major employers in Newport News, Hampton, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Virginia Beach.

Suffolk is approximately 35 minutes from Norfolk International Airport and 40 minutes from Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport.
