June is here, the sun is shining and the weather is getting warmer. While it looks beautiful and summerlike, coastal residents must remember that we are now officially in hurricane season. The Atlantic Hurricane Season extends from June 1 to November 30 and the best way to be safe during the season is to prepare early – before you need to!
Sign up for NNALERT, an emergency notification system for Newport News residents. You pick how you are notified and what information you wish to receive. Know Your Zone! Evacuations will take place according to zones rather than entire areas. Find out where your zone is and listen for instructions. There is not a single set of evacuation instructions to follow – each flooding incident is handled independently from any other and may affect just select areas. It really is as easy as 1 – 2- 3! 1) Stay informed 2) Make a plan 3) Make an emergency kit. If you already have a kit, check it for expired products. The best way to be safe during hurricane season is to be smart, be ready and be prepared early.
